Internationally renowned Urugayan playwright Sergio Blanco returns to the UK stage with WHEN YOU PASS OVER MY TOMB
After Sergio's own original Spanish language production won critical acclaim at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2022 UK audiences can now see this powerful play about our relationship with death in its English language premiere at the Arcola Theatre, directed and translated by Daniel Goldman.
Following the genre of autofiction that the Franco-Uruguayan playwright has been exploring for several years now, in this play Sergio recounts the author's last days. After deciding to organize his assisted suicide in a luxury clinic on the shores of Lake Geneva, he plans to give his body to a young necrophiliac interned in a psychiatric hospital in London. The play alternates between the playwright's encounters with Dr. Godwin, who is in charge of accompanying him on his way to suicide, and those with the young man who is preparing to receive the author's corpse. Beyond the theme of death, the play deals with eroticism, passion and desire - three impulses that are inseparable from any experience of life. When You Walk Over My Tomb unfolds gradually as a dramatic poem celebrating the torments of love, but also as a metaphysical essay on the political status of the post-mortem body: who does a corpse belong to? Since the Greek tragedy, this question has been a constant concern in the art of theatre.
