The protagonist of Maya Arad Yasur’s text “Amsterdam”, a pregnant Israeli violinist, sets out to trace a gas bill from the year 1944 that appears outside her door one morning. During the next 24 hours, she will become more and more aware of the significance of her origins and her gender in an increasingly xenophobe, misogynist environment. The story is told by several voices that contradict and complement each other, trying to find a common point of view for their narrative – but can rarely do more than speculate helplessly about how and why these events could have come to pass.
