The play “Sin of Success” written by the Tunisian director and author Meriam Bousselmi tells the story of a young Arab artist who sees herself cheated of her festival award by a member of her own theatre group: On stage he takes the prize meant for her. Several women artists decide to bring out a play in protest of their overbearing male colleagues. During rehearsals a lively discussion is sparked off about the significance of women’s movements. They gradually develop a sense of selfempowerment, which enables them to come out of the role of the victim traditionally assigned to Arab women.
The Tunisian director and author Meriam Bousselmi wrote the play “Sin of Success” on the basis of real experiences. Conceived as theatre in theatre and in form of a semi-fictional reconstruction of biographic memories, “Sin of Success” analyses the female image in different Arabic countries in comparison to Europe.
