This is a play within a play about Broadway. A husband and wife enter the offices of a New York Producer using a series of ruses to get the meeting. Once in the office they produce a gun and hold the producer at gunpoint while reading the play to him, which he refused to even open. The play concerns a woman who has been accused of murdering her husband by drowning in a lake. All the evidence points towards her despite everyone agreeing that she seems unlike a murderess. Graham, a friend of the accused sets about illustrating to the judge how just because various facts are at hand, their combination doesn’t suppose she is a murderer, i.e. they are only circumstantial. In the end it is discovered that nothing is quite what it seems: her husband is still alive, the man whose body was found was somebody else’s and therefore she should not be sentenced to death. The playwright feigns death because it is decided that dead playwrights are worth more than live ones and eventually a contract is signed.
