Philipp Löhle was born in 1978 in Ravensburg. He studied History, Drama, and Media Sciences as well as German literature in Erlangen and in Rome. While working for his degree, he started writing for the stage, and worked in journalism as well as in film. In 2007, Löhle won a commission from the Stückemarkt (play market) of the Berliner Theatertreffen. His play "Name: Gospodin" won him a fellowship from the Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie (German Industrial Association), and was nominated for the Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis (drama award) in 2008. Also in 2008, Lily Link earned him the Jury Award of the Heidelberger Stückemarkt, as well as a commission (Projektstipendium) by the Baden-Württemberger Jugendtheaterpreis (Youth Theatre Award), in cooperation with Theater Aalen, to develop a play for a young audience. In 2012 he won the Audience Award at the Mülheimer Theatertage for this play "The Thing". His latest play 'Zeros and Ones' opened in January 2013 at the Staatstheater Mainz to great critical acclaim.

Between 2008 and 2010, Philipp Löhle was playwright-in-residence at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. Currently he is playwright-in-residence at the Staatstheater Mainz.
