Qingdao, a city in the throes of war. A young German has to leave China in 1947 for political reasons. He leaves behing his great love Mei Lin and travels with only his memories, a speaking dragon tooth and the promise to come back as soon as he can. His return will take nearly a lifetime.
Shortly before his death the man , now old, gives his grandaughter a shoebox full of letters, diaries, photographs and postcards. From his memories she pieces together the story of the boy and the peach blossom girl. Parallel to his memories, the stories are also told from Mei Lin's perspective as if she were speaking out of the shoebox of memorabilia. A story of love and fear, of yearning and hope,
